Pierre - Visiting the capitol building and grounds
Monument on capitol grounds commemorating the plane crash and deaths of the governor and seven other members of his party several years ago. I believe it was called "Fighting Stallions".
One view of the Badlands National Park near Rapid City which we drove through. We spent a good portion of our day just making our way and stopping for photos. It was so expansive and the scenery was awesome.
One of the overlooks equipped with railings. The Lakota Indians gave this area its name because of the extremely rough terrain.
Bridal Veil Falls was one of three we came across along the side of the road while on the way north to Spearfish SD.
The actual Sioux Falls is downtown in an area designated as Falls Park. The park was beautifully manicured and was a real gathering place for both locals and tourists.
We also visited Pipestone National Monument in Pipestone, MN. We walked the trail out to the falls and viewed the pipestone (compressed red clay) quarries where the stone is dug. Indian families still work in many of the quarries in the area making jewelry and other items with the red stone.
I wasn't able to get any pictures of Mt. Rushmore. We got caught in a hailstorm and had to run for cover. Apparently these are common there in the summer. It cleared up within about 30 minutes and we stopped at two wineries on our way back to our B and B!
